What the card says to us

Although it is not possible to say who sent the card, perhaps a sibling of Miss Young, and it has not been possible to identify Miss Young herself, the address to which the card was sent does tell a story. From as early as 1881 to as late as 1901, Albert Villa, Holbeach, Lincolnshire was a preparatory school run by Miss Hannah Maria Clarke (1847-1906) and Miss Henrietta Sophia Maria W Juncker (1845-?). Miss Juncker was born in the Schleswig-Holstein region of Germany. How she came to be in Holbeach and what happened to her after the 1901 census is not understood.

Miss Clarke on the other hand was the youngest of the five children of Henry Clarke (1804-1883) and Mary Crump (1802-1874). Henry was a builder based in the Holbeach area although Hannah was born in Camberwell. Hannah did not marry and died in Wolstanton, Staffordshire in 1906. What happened between 1901 and 1906 is unknown. In 1904, when the card was sent, was Hannah still at Albert Villa? Was Miss Young a teacher or a pupil?

Albert Villa was in Albert Street in Holbeach. In the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census, Miss Clarke and Miss Juncker are living at three different addresses in Albert Street (165, 163 and 210)

Hannah's siblings were William (1837-?), Mary Anne (1838-?), Frederick (1841-1931), and Thomas (1844-?). Frederick emigrated to Canada in 1871 and in 1876 married the impressively named Emma Commander (1855-1925).
