Dear Mother

This is the Emperor William's Palace. Berlin is very like London. Go to Dresden tomorrow.

Jesse Thomas Herbert Henstock (1876-1965) was the son of Francis William Henstock (1844-1895) and Elizabeth Dale (1851-1908). In the 1891 census, Francis is the Rector of Dry Draton, Cambridge, although he is living in Altrincham, Cheshire.

Jesse, commonly known an Herbert in the census, was a university lecturer and lived by his own means from quite a young age. In 1900 he married Florence Matilda Frow, the daughter of the recipient of this card. In 1939 they were living in Exmouth, Devon and Jesse was listed as a Research Chemist.

what the card says to us

The picture shows the Berlin Palace (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berlin_Palace) and the card was sent from Berlin.

Jesse Thomas Herbert Henstock preferred the name Herbert and the diminutive Bertie. When writing to his mother-in-law, her referred to her as Mother.

This is the second card from 1904 sent by Herbert and Florence to Florence's mother. In April (see card referenced above) they wrote from Rome. They were well travelled around Europe in that year. Perhaps it related to his job as a research chemist. Berlin one day, and Dresden the next.

"Emperor William" is better known these days as Kaiser Wilhelm II (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelm_II,_German_Emperor).
