the message

"Dear Gerty

Motored to Blackpool yesterday. Lovely time, I am just going to my coach 6-40 a. m.

How do you like this P. C.

Yours Sincerely

the sender

Sadly there are no clues to the person behind "Samedi".

the recipient

Gertrude Schofield (1880-1973) was the daughter of James Schofield (1848-1904) and Sarah Hanson (1848-1924). James was a Wool Stapler (buys wool from a producer, grades it, and sells to a manufacturer).

In 1908 Gertrude married James William Shoesmith (1879-1973).  James was a market gardener.

what the card says to us

The picture suggests that this is a romantic card. It appears to be entitled "Relief".

The sender has used the nickname "Samedi" which while being French for Saturday also has connections to Haitian voodoo.

The rest of the message is curious. The use of "yours sincerely" does not seem to fit with the nickname.  What is the significance of having been to Blackpool the previous day? They "motored" to Blackpool presumably by coach? Is the 6.40 coach for the journey back to Huddersfield, where the card was posted?  Is there anything suggestive about the question about the postcard?

All of this is probably quite innocent, but I can't help feeling there are hidden messages in this card.
