the recipient

Harriet Mary Peirce (1879-1973) was the daughter of George Peirce (1852-1921) and Esther Sarah Vinall (1851-1934). George was a butcher. Harriet was the third of 12 children. This probably accounts fro why in both the 1901 and 1911 censuses, Harriet is living, or staying with, her grandparents. Harriet didn't marry. In 1939 she was still living at 1 Castle Terrace, which had been her grandparent's house. She was in paid domestic service.

The spelling of Peirce throughout the family is inconsistent in the records. Sometimes it is Pierce and sometimes it is Pearce. It may be that they were unsure in the beginning and whoever was making the record decided on the spelling.

what the card says to us

The picture shows Vale Crucis Abbey (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valle_Crucis_Abbey) near Llangollen which was where the card was posted.

Otherwise this card is a mystery. Who sent it? Why? And why has it survived for over 100 years.
