what the card says to us
The picture is entitled “Ship of XVIII Century”. Apart from the fact that the card was posted and received in Kent, close to the sea, there does not appear to be any connection. Perhaps 6 year old Arthur collected postcards of ships.
It has been assumed that the sender was Arthur’s mother. It is not clear why she would send him a postcard from nearby Ramsgate when they both lived in the same house. Perhaps the fact that the card is addressed to “Master” might suggest that it was his grandmother who sent the card. Arthur only had one surviving grandmother in 1906 and that was Elizabeth Caspell nee Farrier (1836-1911), wife of John Stephen Caspell, Farmer, (1838-1903) who was living in Sandwich in 1901. Perhaps she was visiting Ramsgate.
