the message

“We arrived quite safely & have seen the doctor, it was awfully funny. My hands are quite sore from carrying that thing of a basket. I hope yours are not. We are just going for a walk. I am afraid we shall not do work.

Au revoir

Your Frances”

what the card says to us

The picture shows a scene of fishing off St Agnes in the Isles of Scilly. There does not seem to be any connection to the message of the family. That may be because the postmark is almost entirely obscured.

The message is mirror written as are many of the cards exchanged by Walter and Frances. They can all be seen in a gallery by following this link

They were 20 and 21 years old when this card was sent in 1907. They married in 1914.

There are questions about the message that will probably never be answered. Who was Frances with? Where were they? Why did they visit a doctor? Why was it funny? What was so terrible about the basket?
