The Sender

Gladys Marion Pearson (1893-1937) was the second child of Louis Frederick Pearson (1864-1943), an engineer and iron founder, and Gertrude Potter (1864-1936). They married in 1889. Gladys's elder sister Phyllis (1891-1973) married Lorimer Cattanach (1881-1941) from well to do Scottish whiskey family. Her younger brother Thomas Royston (1896-1943) married Norah Gascoigne Roy (1904-1991) in 1928. Norah was the daughter of Brigadier-General John William Gascoigne Roy. Gladys did not marry.

The Recipient

Mary Jane Jackson (1873-?) was the family cook. She appears not to have married. She is still single and in the employment of the Pearson family in the 1911 census, along with three maids. Lenton Grove must have been quite a big property and it is now part of the campus of the University of Nottingham.

What the card says to us

The picture shows another big house called Eastbury in Watford. At the time the card was sent, it was a girl's school. I assume that this is where Gladys was aged 14. It can't have been a very good school as she has written "here" instead of "hear" twice.
