The Message

“ Dear M, Will be out early tomorrow morning. Just got the XXXX. Love to all, Aggie “

The Sender

In 1908, Agnes Nickal Haresnape (1888-1977) was 20. She was the fifth of eight children. In the 1911 census Aggie is a domestic servant in Wavertree, Liverpool working for a dental surgeon named Joseph Ainsworth Woods. There is every reason to suspect that 3 years earlier Aggie was a servant also. In 1933 Aggie married William Isaac Jones (1889-1963) in Liverpool. She died in Birkenhead in 1977. No children have been identified.

The Recipient

Aggie’s parents were William Nickal Haresnape (1858-1902) and Janet Chalmers Browne (1860-1938). They married in 1879. William was a joiner by trade. Janet was the recipient.

What does the card say to us

The card is formally addressed to Mrs Haresnape even though it is Aggie’s mother. That was the custom on the day. The message is unclear because of the word that cannot be read. It looks like “run”, however that itself makes little sense unless you know the context. The fact that it was stamped at 8.30 pm and refers to “tomorrow” is interesting. What time would it be delivered? Mrs Haresnape is a widow by 1908. The “love to all” comment refers to the fact that 5 of Aggie’s siblings were still living at home.
