with love from Sam & Min”

the sender

Minnie Filer nee Durman (1889-1967) was born in Ashill, Somerset. Her parents were Charles Durman (1859-1912) and Priscilla Richards (1857-1924). In 1901 Charles was a Gamekeeper in Ashill and in 1911 he was the landlord of the Angel Inn in North Curry, Somerset. This is the address on the card (or rather it says “Angle Inn”.

In 1891 Minnie was living with her parents in Ashill and she was still there with them in 1901. In 1911 Minnie married Samuel Alfred Filer (1873-1958), an Insurance Agent and in the 1911 census they are living in North Curry. At some time between 1911 and 1921 they moved to Canada and are recorded in the census in York West, Ontario. Samuel died in Ontario in 1958. After that it is presumed that Minne returned to England and her death is recorded in Taunton in 1967.

the recipient

Bertha Nora Durman (1892-1945) was born in Ashill and was the younger daughter of the sender. In 1901 she was with her parents and in 1911 she was resident at the Angel Inn in North Curry where her father was the landlord.

In 1915 Bertha married Samuel Baker (1887-1959). In the 1939 Register they were still together and were the proprietors of Creech Castle Hotel in Taunton.

Bertha’s death was recorded in Taunton in 1945.

what the card says to us

The card is a simple Birthday Card with a picture of a girl picking flowers plus some verse. Quite standard.

The message is simple too being straightforward birthday greetings from one sister to another.

The only curiosity is the misspelling of Angel in the address. However, in 1912 North Curry must have been a very small village with few errors when mail was delivered. As Minnie was also living in North Curry at the time you could be forgiven for wondering why she bothered to post the card at all, but on the other hand, its always nice to get something i the post on your birthday.
